James' Journey Beach Volleyball Fundraiser 2012
SOME WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR ABOUT JAMES' JOURNEY:

It was at our last volleyball game in April 2012 when one of our volleyball members, Rachel Martin, mentioned to a group of
us waiting to start our games, that her son, James, was recently diagnosed with a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy called
Duchenne. Rachel mentioned that for the longest time she knew her son did not run like the other boys in his class. She
noticed this especially in kindergarten and first grade. Everyone (including James' doctor) told her things were fine and every
child develops differently, but being his mom, Rachel knew something was wrong. Finally Rachel pushed to see a specialist
where it was in February 2012 she was given the diagnosis.

Since that night, I have discovered that James has been fitted for leg braces and just this week (July 23rd) he had already
lost an additional 5% of muscle mass in his legs. His medicine had to be increased. A wheelchair is in the near future. Rachel
has already moved to a main level apartment which will be more wheelchair friendly. I discovered Rachel is a single parent,
and while James has some medical coverage, Rachel is responsible for a percent of additional costs, including the
cost of leg braces, a wheel chair, home modifications and prescriptions.

I can only imagine how difficult it is leading your family through a lifestyle change. How difficult it would be as a parent to comprehend the idea that statistics predict you will lose your child at a young age. I cannot imagine, though, going through all of this, wanting to give your children the best of everything, but in the back of your minding thinking "how am I ever going to afford it?"

100% of the proceeds from this tournament will be presented to the James' Journey Trust Fund. While I know this will most likely only cover a small portion of the bills for James, I'm hoping whatever we can raise, will make the journey a little more enjoyable and raise awareness of the hopes for a cure.
